Mercy Thompson

>> Tuesday, November 11, 2014

Why I love, love, love this series!

If there is one character that I absolutely love and try to keep up with it is Mercy Thompson! I have read 8 books and a few short stories and I still can't get enough.  There a few supporting characters that I absolutely love but Mercy is just my go to heroine.

One of the things I love about her is she is a strong woman but not actually fearless. Sometimes heroines seem to have no fear even when they are diving into a situation that could easily end their lives or they never have side effects from all the horrible things that happen to them. To keep a series going you have to eventually start to include the mental stress of being in life threatening situations day in and day out. Patricia Briggs does it well and leaves me still in love with Mercy yet feeling her frustration.

Charlaine Harris also did this in the Sookie Stackhouse novels but I found in the last few books I no longer liked Sookie. I felt like she became a total bitch by the end of the series. I am sure I would be too if all that crap happened to me so yes it is realistic but this is fiction and I kind of wanted her to keep some of what made her Sookie. She was so sweet and kind in the beginning and I felt like it was all gone by the end. I don't read fiction to get the warm fuzzies but I also don't read it to be slapped in the face with reality. It is rather contradictory I know but I think the key for me at least is keeping some parts of what made you love the character in the first place.

If you know very little of the Mercy Thompson series I do have quite a few reviews on this site this link will get you to my Patricia Briggs reviews. Mercy is a mechanic and a coyote who can't seem to stay out of trouble. She grew up with a pack of werewolves but her origins are a mystery for quite some time. She can seamlessly shift from human to coyote while her werewolf family  and friends shift with a great deal of pain. She is naturally curious she finds herself in all kinds of mischief with all kinds of magical creatures.

Then there are the men in her life! Who could not enjoy the crazy and humorous interactions between Mercy and all the men....or should I say beasts lined up for a little bit of Mercy Thompson. I recall at least a Vampire and a more than a few dominant wolves and maybe a fey or two vying for her attention.

If you love a supernatural story with a great fun female lead character the Mercy Thompson series is for you. I tend to love the stories with many supernatural aspects as they keep you on your toes wondering if it is fey magic or vampires or .....something entirely unheard of causing trouble.

My plan when I get some free time is to attempt to separate the books in my head so I can give you a solid review of the books I have actually read and not reviewed but I can't seem to find a copy of some of them so it means they are on my old kindle that no longer works. So I will look into replacing them with a hard copy and maybe re-reading them all as time allows.

Stay tuned for a quick look into the amazing story of Kate Daniels my other favorite series. I hope I never have to choose between Mercy and Kate! I had a hard time choosing which one to talk about first on this blog because they are equal in my book! So different but so much of what I love!

If you have the time please visit my business website and blog as well www.fit-girl.com and as always thanks for reading!

Life sometimes gets in the way, but I am back!

Where I have been
I have been busy doing this and that and opening a new business. I have tried to make money with direct sales and business and jobs that just were not working for me. Well actually that is an understatement they were disastrous failures on my part. It took me a long time to realize I was not a good match and trying to sell products I either didn't believe in, or in most cases didn't want to pressure people to buy was sucking the life out of me.

I finally decided to open my own business as a pole dance fitness instructor. What could be better than taking something I am passionate about and making it my career. FitGirl Studio was born....Okay it was not actually born right away it was an idea in my head for many months before I took the plunge.  I even took a course to become a personal trainer for some credibility beyond my years of pole dance experience. Now I love every session I do and am never saying I don't want to go to work today when I have sessions planned.

There is also a lot of behind the scenes stuff that is taking up much of my time and those are the days I feel like I don't want to go to work or to the next networking event or .....well get out of bed. I am going to be honest, I completely dread this part of business. Don't get me wrong I do like people but it takes a lot of work crawling out of my comfort zone to network with people.

In case you have yet to notice I am not a naturally outgoing person as I would rather spend an evening with a good book than going to a banquet. I would much rather donate a prize to a charity than show up at the event and chat with people.

I am thinking this blog would be a great place to plan my occasional retreat from reality. By that I really I mean force myself to have that retreat by at least promising to read a book a month and review it. This means I will at least have to review the books I have read recently and continue to make some time to just relax and read a good book.

Dark Novels Future!
Yes, there is a future for this blog I will just be mixing in some diary posts and when I do have some time maybe some fun FitGirl fiction. What could be better than a pole dancing superhero! So if you would like to see some fiction head over to my website www.fit-girl.com take a look at what I do and tell me what kind of stories you would like to hear!

I have not given up reading I just won't be reading a book a week like I used to. I do think I can manage a book a month and I can go back and review the story lines of some of the books I  have recently read start giving reviews again. I need a little getaway from all the stresses of running a business. So in the near future look forward to some Mercy Thompson and Kate Daniels reviews.

Life is good but reading is not a priority....

>> Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Well it actually is but I am sure you don't want a review of my personal trainer manual and my anatomy of exercise books. I am studying to become a personal trainer. I did read a pretty good book just about a month ago that I would like to review. It was the first in the Witch and Wizard series so when I get a handle on my time I will review that and I will work on starting discussions about some of my old reviews.

On that note I am doing pretty well with my side business and when I get done I hope that it pays for all of my education and the creation of a small home gym so I can take clients at home. I am really excited about this and hopefully it will take me about a year to get all the certifications I would like to get and then I will be working in something that truly makes me feel good when I get out of bed each day.

Happy reading everyone! I hope to be back here soon reading away with you!

Clean Sweep By Ilona Andrews Discussion

>> Friday, November 2, 2012

So I started reading the new serial fiction  Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews and I have decided I seriously have to set a timer to stop reading if I want to get anything done.

I have only read chapter one part 1&2 thus far but that is only because I really have to complete other things and not get caught up in this amazing story. As I have come to expect from these authors there is never a dull moment.

The opening is just the right amount of mystery and intrigue and of course a bit of violence to get you started. I really love the way we get little bits and pieces of things that are really important but just enough to make you feel the NEED to read on.  Click here to read the first section and then if you wish come back here and we can discuss it in the comments.

I was planning on working on these one post at a time so please keep your discussions limited to the section in this blog post (chapter one part 1&2) so there are no spoilers for those who have not read that far along in the story. Tell me what you liked and what you didn't like and why! I can't wait to hear from you.

Happy reading!

Okay I have been kind of lazy....

>> Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Well I have not been lazy entirely I have managed to loose the extra 20 pounds I was complaining about for years with a variety of dance classes including pole dance fitness, Latin dance and ballroom with a little aerial arts on the side. I have also started selling Tastefully Simple and am finding it a lot easier to sell than any other product I have tried to sell in the past. I am hoping to get more online sales so that I have more time to read but until then I am going to try to give you a weekly update.

Ilona Andrews as you know is my favorite author and I have a new book on my kindle that is related to my favorite series. I have a short story as well and the Edge series to catch up on. Today I went to look around and also found she is doing a serial called Clean Sweep and I though if nothing else I could get a discussion going on each part of this series.

I have dumped all of my online money making ideas except a few and I will not be advertising them here except maybe in the side bar. I will begin to leave each post with a link to my Tastefully Simple website but this page will be all about books and other forms of media that fit in the Dark Novel category. I realize I made a mistake writing about all my crazy money making ideas on a book blog and I will only talk about it in my personal updates from now on and other than Tastefully Simple there will be no links other than places to buy the books or media I am talking about.

Thanks for your patience and continued support! See you all soon with an update on my reading progress. I am looking for more great short stories to write about because I have a horrid time putting a good full length book down to work on things like the piles of laundry in my basement or packing up for a party that will actually earn me some money. So if anyone has any dark short stories to share let me know I am always willing to post them or just read them and discuss them.

Until next time,
