Monday Rant: No Soliciting Sign

>> Monday, February 8, 2010

Okay I am so tired of the doorbell in the middle of my work out. So I need some help with a catch all sign. I would love to use a picture of my German Shepherd and use a quote from a Kim Harrison novel "Day-sleeper solicitors will be eaten" but that could get me sued.

I get kids wanting to shovel my snow or mow my grass, we do that ourselves. I get all kinds sales people and people pushing religion and politics. I don't want any of these people to come to my door. My husband works a third shift and he sleeps during the day. When the bell rings or they pound on the door my dog goes crazy baking and I really don't want to answer it in my work out clothes all sweaty. I want something that really gets their attention and then a list of who is not allowed to disturb me. I don't care if I have to print several sheet of paper and tape them to my outer door.

I have been known to let my dog out on the porch and let her bark while I talk to the people from inside but they just talk over her barking until she quits. She is really friendly and she calms down in a minute or two and the solicitors must be used to that. I really wish they would leave us alone right now the only people I can easily get rid of are people asking about home improvement issues. I just tell them I rent because I do rent this place but I own a duplex two blocks away.

Maybe it should say I am a nudist and I don't answer the door or I am a hermit don't disturb me or I am a serial killer don't ring the doorbell unless you want to wind up in my freezer. I don't like being rude but really who wants to be disturbed by a stranger selling something.

For A Few More Demons by Kim Harrison

>> Sunday, February 7, 2010

For a Few More Demons is the fifth book in the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. I have reviews for the 4 previous books under the Kim Harrison tab in the side bar.

Now you are going to have to bear with me I have had some trouble remembering where books started and stopped since I read books 5-7 one right after another.

If you have not read the previous 4 books and don't want any spoilers stop reading now and start with the first book Dead Witch Walking. This is not a series that you can start in the middle without tons and tons of confusion.

The Focus an ancient werewolf artifact is now in Rachel and David's possession. Unfortunately it has some pretty bad side effects on the people surrounding them. Weres are being murdered and Rachel takes a run from the FIB to try and find out who is killing the weres and trying to make it look like suicides. She suspects they are being murdered in efforts to locate the Focus.

If that is not enough for Rachel to deal with Trent has asked her to work security at his wedding where Al shows up possessing a familiar body. Al the big bad demon is out to get Rachel and goes on a rampage in the streets of Cincinnati. They let Piscari out of prison to deal with Al and all hell breaks loose. The story isn't complete of you don't mention the crazy demon Newt who manages to escape the ever after and come after Rachel for something, but what even Newt cannot remember. Newt even has Ceri shaking in her boots the demon is powerful and insane.

There are some crazy plot twists in this book and a lot of people die including a few characters that have been around for awhile. This book is full of strong emotion and seems to be a turning point for Rachel. I loved this book I am giving it 5 stars out of 5. Kim Harrison is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors as I am loving the way she develops her characters.

I still have to mention I just love Jenks the absolutely hilarious pixie and as you learned in the last book he only has a life span of 20 years so I don't know that he will last till the end of the series and it makes me sad every-time Rachel thinks about it.

>> Thursday, February 4, 2010

I have three Kim Harrison books left to review I plan to get them all posted by next Friday. I have been spending a lot of my time trying to get in shape. Check out my other blog to see my progress Sexy For Life. Until I reach a healthy weight this is my main priority. While I am on the treadmill I either watch something from Netflix or I listen to books I downloaded from Audible. I will leave a link at the bottom of my post if you would like to check them out.
I have also been back to work at the automotive shop a little until my replacement has her baby. Then I will work full time for at least six weeks then part time for awhile. I always seem to have trouble adjusting my schedule when things change so I hope to be here as much as possible.

Celia's Puppies by Claudia Hall Christian

>> Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Celia's Puppies is the second installment in the Denver Cereal series. This book was great. If you go the book reading route and don't check weekly for new material at the website The Denver Cereal, beware that there are a lot of characters to keep track of. Since I do the book reading and don't go to the website to check for new material i found the nifty character guide extremely helpful.

There is a lot of life to the characters in this book and they are what makes it interesting. There is some action and some psychic phenomenon but mostly there are various love stories. These love stories are not limited to potential mates they truly encompass love in all its various forms. There are great stories of friendship and family as well as the traditional love stories.

So much is revealed in this book it is hard for me to write a summary that both does the book justice and not give away the many surprises.

Celia Marlow has been a dead but central character in these books. It was her love, care and psychic ability that have drawn the people in this book together. Even after her death she has a great impact on those she loved. She guides those who share her abilities even after her death.

There are several developing story lines in this book and it is hard to say which ones are most important. I would say Jacob and Jill are still the main characters as things all seem to travel on a winding road that always comes back to their story. Jacob is having trouble with his company's board of directors so he becomes distracted and Jill feels torn between her old life and the new life she could have. Jill's ex-husband threatens to take her daughter away and his new wife nearly kills her own sister. Even with all his distractions Jacob never gives up on Jill even when she thinks it could be over.

As you take the journey that Jill and Jacob lead you on you will find many other interesting characters like Mike (Jill's brother) and Val (Jacob's sister) who are also in love and have surpassed many obstacles to get to a place where they can be together. Val is a famous actress and they end up on Oprah when the news comes out they are married. You also find out that Mike is a great hero to the nation and a member of the Fey special forces team.

Many more characters are developed in this volume including friends and family of both Jill and Jacob. I have to say Claudia Hall Christian is very talented when it comes to character development and I will be following her as long as she is writing. I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Feeling Better

>> Sunday, January 31, 2010

Well I started yesterday off feeling better but my heater was broken and within a few hours I was feeling like my house was a sauna. We have had issues with it for a while but usually it will get stuck off and that is easier to handle for me. I am still not sure it is fixed but at least it is not 85 degrees in here anymore. I couldn't work out in the heat and I am not sure it is cooling off this morning I turned the heat down but it seems to keep getting warmer. I will make a call to my step-dad/landlord if it keeps getting hotter but before it hits the 80's again. I need to get some house work done too but the really awesome thing is that I have 4 books done and ready to review.

Thanks to my friend Kristin, that I met last semester in college I borrowed and read three more of the books in the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. I now have books 5-7 read and I have Celia's Puppies read too. I am also hoping that the new book by Kim Harrison due out on February 23 will be released on audio right away. I have been on the treadmill a lot and it is much easier to listen than to read on the treadmill. The Kim Harrison books have a lot of thought in them and the story line is still very interesting and I really like how the characters grow. I will have some reviews up soon.
